What’s New in Managed Healthcare With Nursing Agencies?
Many nurses, doctors, medical assistants and other healthcare professionals usually report that most hospitals, clinics and healthcare agencies are very good to work for. While the hours may sometimes be long, and the work never-ending, the pay and benefits are usually more than enough to compensate those workers. Any healthcare organization that treats their employees well insures that employees will be content and happy with their jobs, and everyone knows that happy employees typically result in the highest quality care. However, nursing agencies that supply staffing for healthcare facilities sometimes appear to ignore that concept when they hire and fire their employees.
The Pros and Cons of Nursing Agencies
For nurses, working for a healthcare agency is usually a very positive experience financially because the temporary agency nursing opportunities typically pay significantly more than permanent nursing positions. Why is this the case? The answer comes down to benefits. When a hospital, clinic, or other healthcare facility hires a nurse full-time, they need to pay for benefits, which include health insurance, life insurance, workers compensation, a 401k program and more – all of which can account for up to 30 percent of a full time salary. On the other hand, if these facilities hire a nurse from a healthcare agency, these added costs are no longer a factor, so they can pay a salary that’s often 20 to 30 percent higher than the permanent position salaries.
So is the nursing agency a good solution?
Unfortunately, nursing agencies are doing a disservice to the healthcare industry. Instead of promoting nursing as a professional salaried job, deserving of quality pay and benefits, nursing agencies turn the population of nursing into a commodity. Nurses who dedicate their time to the long hours and personalized care of the permanent nursing position, are threatened by the impersonal temporary care that comes from the temporary nurse. Furthermore, in order to earn more revenue, many nursing agencies cut costs in ways that some might consider immoral and unethical.
